Oskaras Korsunovas - Oskaro Kosunovo Teatras
Romeo ir Dziuljeta (Romeo en Julia)
The smouldering hatred between two Italian families flares up. In a zinc-topped kitchen, surrounded by an array of kitchen implements ranging from rolling pins to chopping knives, two gangs come to blows. There is a great clashing and clanging of pots and pans. Kitchen knives are drawn. In this contemporary interpretation of 'Romeo and Juliet' by the thirty-four-year-old Lithuanian director Oskaras Korsunovas, the scene of the action is not a fine palazzo in late-medieval Verona, where two noble houses stand at daggers drawn, but a popular pizzeria, where two neighbouring families are locked in fierce competition. In the heat of the quarrel, two young teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, fall head over heels in love. The inescapable tragedy unfolds. However, Korsunovas emphasises the absurdity of violence by exaggerating his characters. In his ironic style, he ridicules Latin machismo and the excesses it leads to.
