You Can Do It!
In 2021 the Canadian producer Caribou released his track You Can Do It. Sounding out on apparently endless repeat are the words: ‘You Can Do It’. The repetitive tune is a call for empowered self-exploitation. Yes, I can do it! Interspersed with: Do it! Do it! Do it! But at what price? During this multi-day festival, we reflect on our performance-oriented society. The world is spinning faster than ever, but the fuel is running out. An incredible number of people are suffering from stress-induced disorders, anxiety and burn-out. The consequences of individual ambition and/or of a system that has gone into overdrive? In search of answers and ways out, during this festival we come out at the Argentinian choreographer Marina Otero and her explosive dance production Fuck me about a performance-oriented society. Theatre maker Tom Struyf presents the theatrical road movie Finding Willard about mental healthcare and solidarity. Our in-house artist Collectif Faire-Part curates a thematic film programme. And together with Opera Ballet Vlaanderen we present the Belgian premiere of Fin de Partie, the first and only opera by György Kurtág based on the play Endgame by Samuel Beckett. In this masterwork, Kurtág and Beckett deal with the human ambition to always want to progress and to always want more. In the light of this endgame, this is no more than an illusion.
