Brussels Philharmonic and Ictus Ensemble join forces to offer you an unforgettable concert
Is the symphony orchestra a dusty relic of times gone by? Conductor Ilan Volkov made proving the contrary his profession. Widely admired for his radical vision and open-mindedness, Volkov approaches the orchestra as a dynamic laboratory, with which he can develop new, contemporary experiences. Since last season, he has been serving as the first guest conductor of Brussels Philharmonic, where he is overseeing a structural collaboration with the Ictus Ensemble, among other things.
Now this triad is presenting what is emphatically not an everyday symphonic programme. Anthony Braxton’s Creative Orchestra Music 1976 may soon be turning fifty, but his idiosyncratic blend of avant-garde composition and big band is still refreshing. In Diamonds, Alvin Lucier dismantles ‘the orchestra’ as a cultural construction and allows the sound itself to come to the fore. Finally, Mariam Rezaei and Matthew Shlomowitz enrich the symphonic palette with turntables in a brand-new work which will see its Belgian premiere at DE SINGEL.
