GEANNULEERD / Tyshawn Sorey Trio
Double bill
Tyshawn Sorey comes to DE SINGEL and presents a selection from his trio album Mesmerism.
In recent years, composer/drummer Tyshawn Sorey has developed into one of the most intriguing figures in what, for convenience, you might describe as avant-garde jazz: the place where contemporary classical music and jazz meet. Sorey has played with great musicians including Anthony Braxton, Vijay Iyer and Marilyn Crispell; and is responsible for a great deal of unusual music in equally unusual line-ups, often characterised by carefully crafted concepts. On his recent trio album Mesmerism, with pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Matt Brewer, however, he opted for spontaneity (preparation was kept to the absolute minimum) and he resolutely stays within jazz. Work by figures including Horace Silver, Duke Ellington and Paul Motian is filleted to the bone and approached from surprising angles. The result is an inventive and playful collaboration which above all puts the essence of the song in the spotlight.
As a warm-up, together with students from the Antwerp Conservatoire Sorey presents a selection from his Autoschediasms. Sorey himself describes this as a ‘three-dimensional hybrid system that makes it possible to create compositions in the moment with a large ensemble. If only to understand how that works, this concert is a must!
