There are those composers who, like strange tanks, thunder through the musical landscape just as Charles Ives did when he composed 'The Unanswered Question' in 1908. As he himself quite literally put it, this American wanted to have nothing to do with the 'softies', the 'pussies', the 'nice Lizzies', the 'play-it-pretty-minds' or the half-hearted musical candy.
Another such composer who is happy to roll up her sleeves is the Australian Mary Finsterer. She wrote her dynamic violin concerto 'Constans' for Irvine Arditti. Due to the unusual make-up of the orchestra, the work is now rarely performed. This concerto is one of Arditti's favourite pieces and it is for this reason he chose to participate in this European premiere.
The Italian composer Luca Francesconi has an old-fashioned intensity! Writing a brand new violin concerto for Arditti with electronics and large ensemble is an idea he has been hoping to realize for a long time. In 'Body Electric', his politically aware litany, the soloist is intended to behave like a real rock musician.
From the dust stirred up by Francesconi's 'Body Electric' Peter Adriaansz models in 'Structure II' a moving cloud of extended sounds that surround the public from all sides. Once the cloud disappears, Wim Laman's 'Vortex' drags you into the depths of an effervescent whirlpool. Not for the faint-hearted!
