Sunday 5 November is the grand finale of the three days of Bach. For those interested in the singing workshop given in the previous week by Peter Kooij, the day may begin with hearing the results of their work.
Finally, the Ensemble Explorations interprets one of Bach's absolute masterpieces, the 'Musikalisches Opfer'. It belongs with 'Die Kunst der Fuge' among Bach's so-called abstract pieces in which he was able to indulge his compositional ingenuity without having to take into account the possibilities and restrictions of a specific set of instruments. The point of departure for this piece is a theme that Frederic the Great, King of Prussia offered Bach during the composer's visit to the palace in the city of Potsdam. The 'Musikalisches Opfer' is not a cycle in the true sense, but is rather a collection of solo and ensemble pieces. It is a brilliant demonstration of musical mastery and inventiveness. Abstract, but nevertheless really moving.
