For the final concert, Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Vocale Gent have chosen to perform a religious Bach cantata, 'Komm, du Süße Todesstunde' that was first played on 27 September 1716 in Weimar. This is very familiar territory for them. The two recorders, which guarantee a mild orchestral sound, are prominent in the orchestral setting. The chorale melody 'Herzlich tut mich verlangen' plays a binding role. There is a thread that runs through all the cantatas in this concert, and this is the desire for death. As far as Bach was concerned, death was not a sad affair but rather a reason for a passionate yearning and tranquil joy. The pietistic, almost romantic cantata 'Liebster Gott, wenn werd' ich sterben' rounds off the three days and the evening in a fitting manner.
