Soprano Claron McFadden and composer Hilda Paredes create a musical theatre portrait of the Afro-American freedom fighter Harriet Tubman (1822-1913). As a young woman, she escaped from her life as a slave through the famous ‘Underground Railroad’. She fought in the American Civil War and contributed to the abolition of slavery. In the libretto, Harriet shares her life story with the young Alice. She describes her injuries and religious visions. She tells of spirituals with secret, coded instructions for flight. Of her return to save her family. Because ultimately, how free are you if your loved ones are in chains? The Mexican Hilda Paredes is one of the leading composers of her generation. In Claron McFadden she has found the ideal interpreter for Harriet.
