Opera21 2019
More than ever, the international musical theatre landscape is in a state of flux. And once again, Opera21 and De Operadagen, its sister festival in Rotterdam, are designed to stimulate. In Antwerp, we do this in a collaboration between Opera Vlaanderen, Toneelhuis, Flemish and foreign production houses and deSingel as the festival centre. Opera21 is one of Europe’s most intense moments of musical theatre creation featuring newly composed music. This year, there has been much literary inspiration for librettists from Jonathan Littell, Sylvia Plath and Franz Kafka. And we are probing contemporary themes such as the position of the woman, the horrors of war, and the divided nature of democracy. Experience some exceptional shows, as well as interactive performances and installations from sculptors, dancers and image makers. Thus we are broadening the definition of the musical theatre genre together.
