Following on from Loo Tunes, Autobahn Utopia and 'Music For Birthdays', One Trick Pony, the musical artists’ laboratory founded by Liesa Van der Aa, will over the coming years be working on a brand new musical theatre triptych ‘Court of Choice’, in which the concept of power is put through the wringer in a variety of forms In this first part, ‘Court of Choice part 1 - PLAY', One Trick Pony immediately rubs out the boundaries between text, image and music. Better still, together they create a single language and a single score. ' Court of Choice part 1 - PLAY' is a meticulously detailed musical tennis match for three actors, a string quartet and percussion, in which an innocent passer-by is given the role of umpire. He leads and steers the initially friendly game and gradually morphs into a power-crazed individual. Expect a happening, a tableau vivant in which the balance of power in our divided democracy is laid bare through playing sport. With a nod to Hobbes’ ‘Leviathan’, 'Court of Choice part 1 - PLAY' puts forward a vision of what happens to an individual who monitors the rules but totally loses himself in his job. Greed and the desire to have more and to go higher drive both the umpire and the players in the game to extremes. With Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo and trumpet god Chet Baker at the back of her mind, Liesa Van der Aa has composed a series of musical cells for One Trick Pony that drive the rhythm of the competition to a crescendo.
