'The Rumba Kings' tells the story of Congolese rumba.
The Rumba Kings tells the story of Congolese rumba, the music that helped an entire country to fight against oppression and to struggle for freedom and its own identity. The film focuses on the way in which this music changed a nation and gave the African continent its own big music stars such as Franco, Le Grand Kallé and Dr Nico. By means of exclusive interviews, music recordings, live performances and previously unseen archive material, The Rumba Kings explores the most neglected side of a country that is historically associated with wars, poverty and mineral resources. Of course, Congo’s true richness does not lie underground, but lies with its people and its music. The rhythm of Congolese rumba became the soundtrack to the country’s independence and conquered the entire African continent with its hypnotic guitar sounds.
The film is a stunning tribute to this rich music genre and was deservedly showered with awards.
