Begüm Erciyas explores touch and darkness in After Light.
At DE SINGEL, in-house artist Begüm Erciyas has shown time and again that her creations are meant to be experienced rather than passively viewed. In her previous work, Hands Made from 2025, she was already exploring how touch shapes our relationship with the world. In After Light, observation is ruled out altogether: this tactile journey, created in collaboration with the author Alaa Alqaisi and the artist Robert Ochshorn, takes place in the dark.
You are led through the work not as a spectator, but as a participant, guided by your own sense of touch, and by the words that Alqaisi wrote shortly before she was evacuated from Gaza. The intimate gesture of touch becomes a primary form of communication. How do we survive when the lights go out? Experience After Light for yourself and discover what can be learned from literally feeling our way in the dark.
