Caroline Guiela Nguyen on language, truth and love.
One day, when Valentina comes home from school, she finds a handwritten note on the table. In French, a language her mother does not understand. Condemned to be the bearer of bad news, Valentina learns the difference between imagining, narrating, and translating. Sometimes lying is an act of love.
Can you distort the truth to protect a loved one? This is one of the central questions in the poignant and moving Valentina by Caroline Guiela Nguyen. The French theatre-maker, who has been artistic director of the Théâtre national de Strasbourg since 2023, is renowned for her epic yet intimate theatre. She explores deep human emotions and tells stories that transcend borders. Following on from Lacrima and Saigon, she returns to DE SINGEL with a parable about reeds and bamboo - and about how an undesirable truth is twisted or suppressed.
With a diverse cast of professional actors and experts from the Romanian community in Strasbourg, Nguyen presents a modern fable about language mastery and self-determination. About knowing, not knowing, and everything in between. For in the fragile space between language and culture, words and silences are often entangled with power.
