Frank Castorf - Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz
Forever young
The relationship between the leading character Chance Wayne (brilliantly portrayed by Martin Wuttke) and the great love of his youth, Heavenly Finley, is made impossible by her father, 'Boss' Tom Finley. This white politician is the incarnation of the Machiavellian, corrupt and racist Southern potentate. Although Chance Wayne is a perennial failure, both as a soldier and as an actor, he never stops trying to be the golden boy who is honoured by the American system (and the father). Out of pure opportunism, he eventually gives up his ideals and his moral and spiritual integrity. 'Sweet Bird of Youth' is perfectly suited to Frank Castorf's dramatic style. There is room for exaggeration, for kitsch and camp, for white wigs, cowboy hats and fake palm trees. Although Castorf's directing choices may be politically inspired, he always gives them a parodic twist and an ironic sting.
