'Een nieuw Requiem' is more than just another presentation of Mozart's masterpiece with new performers. Director Josse De Pauw gets to work with strong artistic personalities all of whom underwrite their own contemporary touch in their own special field. Christian Köhler has created an adaptation for the popular harmony ensemble of Mozart's age. He supplemented it with two extra horns, a double bass and two basset horns which is precisely the ensemble Mozart prescribed in his 'Gran Partita'. The musical performance is by the wind ensemble I Solisti del Vento and the soprano Iris Luypaers. The texts are performed by the actor Tom Jansen. These are not based on the original Latin hymns but on a new text by Jeroen Brouwers recently published in an illustrated edition with illustrations by Roger Raveel. In his vast body of work Brouwers frequently reflects on death: 'Of course you could imagine death as a soldier with a bayonet, but I have always tried to imagine it as a beautiful, evil woman who is both cruel and malicious.'
