Wasis Diop is one of the internationally most widely known African musicians with Senegalese roots. From the very start, Wasis Diop's music has been open to other cultural influences. In the seventies he founded the West African Cosmos, a group whose music was described as Afro-Jazz long before the term 'world music' became fashionable. He decided to go his own way in 1979. While travelling around the world he met the Japanese avant-garde musician Yasuaki Shimizu. He then spent time in Jamaica, London and Paris and made several solo albums, the latest of which 'Judu bék', was released recently. 'Nothing in this life is static. The only danger is that we do not adapt, that we do not travel and always stay where we are, both musically and spiritually. Our answer as musicians is to move forward.'
