Alex Baczynski-Jenkins continues investigating relationships, sensuality and queerness.
In 2019, the London-based choreographer and artist Alex Baczynski-Jenkins was a guest at the Venice Biennale with Untitled (Holding Horizon). In it he takes the next step in his investigation of relationships, sensuality and queer influences. His practice unfolds a ‘politics of longing’: relationships are less the means to and more the end of a choreography. Both the process and the performances are “intensely relational”. There is a strong aspect of interdependence and collectivity. Of queerness. Through alienated movements and the box step – a basic movement that is used in a variety of dance styles – Baczynski-Jenkins creates a fusion of synchronisation and disorientation, of limitation and loss. Navigating between visibility and invisibility, the performers move through a changing dynamic of collectivity, intimacy and interdependence. They influence and are influenced by the live mixed light and sound. Untitled (Holding Horizon) constantly elicits shifting associations: from a rave to a pastoral fantasy.
"I see sharing pleasure in dancing and moving together as itself a queer mode of affective resistance. And for sure this piece touches on the experience of the queer dance floor as a place that can invoke a safe space within a hostile environment. This pleasure and politics can be contained within a single gesture of the hands—the longing, playful wrists. In the club, this gesture is a way of sending out a sign, a mode of queer communication and self-enactment." - Alex Baczynski-Jenkins, Mousse Magazine
Untitled (Holding Horizon) is an ongoing performance: during the performance you are free to leave the room and enter again.
* You can combine this performance with Lands of Concert. Please note that those attending Untitled (Holding Horizon) at 20:00 cannot join Avoirdupois (Friday) or Software Garden (Saturday) afterwards. It is possible, however, to join Untitled (Holding Horizon) after Avoirdupois or Software Garden.
