Performance artist Brandy Butler asks pressing questions about the body and weight.
In her first solo work, the American performance artist Brandy Butler, a member of Theater Neumarkt (Zürich), asks pressing questions about the body and weight in our society. What do we project onto the weight of a body, and for whom are we actually measuring it? AvoirDuPois, “the weight of things”, is a critical performance that brings together movement, text, music and physical experimentation. The worst possible punishment that the ancient Greek gods could impose upon Atlas was to carry a weight. Weight as mass. Mass as the measure of the material. 13% of the world’s population is considered obese. And yet our society is characterised by a constant longing to prioritise non-fat, “normal” bodies. The current body positivity movement may have made obesity more visible, but fatness still remains the unwelcome outcast of humanity.
"At some point I really had to question what is it that I actually do, and what separates me from others. I’ve come to realize that what I truly am is a storyteller. I can bring people together and captivate with my stories. This can be expressed across different mediums: theatre, or dance, or music. In the end, it’s always about the story. Since I have connected with what I feel is my personal artistic purpose, it’s made me so free to create on a level that I just wasn’t able to access before. It feels good to have finally arrived." Brandy Butler, Lodown Magazine
* You can combine this performance with Lands of Concert and Untitled (Holding Horizon).
