Along with an intersectional group of performers, Pilgrim imagines new approaches to care.
The British artist Rory Pilgrim won the Prix de Rome Visual Arts 2019 for his film The Undercurrent. With the Belgian première of Software Garden he makes his DE SINGEL debut. Under this title, between 2016 and 2018 he created a music album, an exhibition and a live concert. Software Garden explores the relationship between technology, disability and care in times of rising inequality, nationalism and political isolationism. The performance is somewhere between Kabuki theatre, a pop concert and a space for political action. Poet and disability advocate Carol R. Kallend speaks live from her house in Sheffield about the drastic measures taken by the British government regarding the framing of people with a disability, which meant she had less access to care. She finds a voice in a robotic companion. Software Garden interweaves poetry and music and brings together an intersectional group of participants to reimagine care systems.
"I am a real YouTube addict and watching vloggers is my main source of media I consume. I am endlessly fascinated by the desire of those to pick up a camera and share their lives, thoughts and experiences whether that be them showing you their local environments, talking about youth culture and cars, or more complex political realities." Rory Pilgrim, Open Space Contemporary
Software Garden is a Relaxed performance. The hall lights are never fully switched off, the hall doors remain open (latecomers are welcome and you can always go to the toilet), you can make noise, there is no loud music, and there are no unexpected effects such as explosions or flashes of light.
* You can combine this performance with Lands of Concert and Untitled (Holding Horizon).
