This is a double bill of two exceptional site-specific performances. Mamaza decided to present these two projects in a space used for the visual arts. In this way the trio hopes to break down the conventions of viewing. In a museum or gallery you view things in a different way than in a theatre. Their work requires this different way of viewing.
In P.A.D., a 2007 duet with Fabrice Mazliah and Ioannis Mandafounis, you are also very close to the action. The audience is seated along the four sides of a wooden cube, a small arena in the middle of which Mazliah and Mandafounis await you. Their relationship is unclear. Are they partners, enemies or strangers? The event throws you off balance, confuses and moves you. P.A.D. is an experiment in closeness and intimacy.
In Y you are just as close to the artist. In fact you virtually step into May Zarhy's shoes. Or into her mind, rather. She talks about the how and why of artistic creation. What is creativity? What is the fundamental driving force behind it? This personal monologue leads you to a broad field of possibilities, ways of thinking and questions. Y is a reflection on the intellectual and the sensual, and in this respect covers the whole field of art, not only that of dance.
