Agog is the alternative fusion jazz trio comprising guitarist Frank Wingold, bass guitarist Mark Haanstra and drummer Joost Lijbaart. The focus is undoubtedly Wingold's guitar. He considers the guitar to be the most underused solo instrument in jazz: you can play several tones on it at the same time and you can load the sound with all sorts of effects. Frank Wingold makes avid use of all this: the range of sounds he extracts from his guitar seems to know no bounds. He spans raw blues, overpowered rock, electronics and contemporary jazz. As a trio they are masters at building up energy. The sound of Mark Haanstra's electric bass certainly has something to do with that. You do not often hear anyone using the bass in such a free and open manner. For once, a comparison with Jaco Pastorius is not entirely unfounded. When it comes to the drummer Joost Lijbaart, you can hear that instead of imposing the rhythm from above, he allows himself to be carried along by the groove. Altogether, this makes for some exceptionally intense and organic music.
