The composer Esther Venrooy has written a new work called Odradek, for saxophone, Gameboys and visuals, commissioned by deSingel. Her sister Isolde provided the images and Han Van den Hoof made it all click together so that this material 'responds' to the music. The result is very special: music with a certain theatricality, without losing its core - composition. Esther Venrooy combines traditional compositional techniques with personal working methods. 'My compositions take shape in the same way as films are edited. I let acoustic images clash with scraps of sound to lead to a narrative whole...' She digitally manipulates 'found' sounds and combines them with electronically-created sounds, deconstructed speech patterns and traditional instruments.
