This is the first public presentation of this workshop project on contemporary music by Champ d'Action, deSingel and Antwerp Conservatory, and it focuses on the music of the Slovenian trombonist and composer Vinko Globokar.
In Accord (1966) - for soprano, flute, trombone, cello, electronic organ and percussion - a phrase taken from the work of the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky: 'I know the power of words and their sound', is translated into English, Slovenian, German and French and chopped up into syllables which are then jumbled up. This then forms the phonetic material for the creation of various dramatic situations (dixit Globokar) for the soprano.
Masterclass students also perform works by Globokar and other modern composers such as James Fulkerson, Richard Barrett and Georges Crumb. Finally, the cellist Arne Deforce and the British composer Richard Barrett perform Barrett's Blattwerk (2002), a composition for cello and live electronics. Although there is only one instrumentalist, Barrett conceives the work as a duo for cello and live electronics.
