Machinefabriek is the alias of the sound-tinkerer Rutger Zuydervelt. Since 2004 Machinefabriek has rapidly made a name for itself by producing its own CDs. In an interview in the Volkskrant newspaper Zuydervelt states that much of his music is based on 'an experiment with an instrument'. The parts that are played live are cut, pasted and combined with other samples, such as a conversation, sounds of the city or an electric toothbrush. He uses effect apparatus and loop pedals to gradually create a sound tapestry. Musically speaking, the sound of Machinefabriek goes in various directions: from hypnotic electronic sounds to a drone built up on the piano with subtle variations and successful offshoots in the direction of noise.
