Island Universe is a multimedia project involving images, electronics and acoustic instruments. It is a creation that crosses the boundaries between music, image, light and sound. The audience will be immersed in a series of 'island universes': small isolated places with sound and images which at the same time embody a whole universe. The electronic and acoustic sounds interact with the gradually darkening space and the constantly changing gaseous visual projections by Ludo Engels. Stevie Wishart took an improvisational approach to writing this new score. Most appropriately, it is performed by the Q-O2 ensemble from Brussels, which has frequently worked with internationally renowned improvisational musicians. The ones involved here certainly have quite a reputation: the harpist Rhodri Davies (UK) has worked with John Zorn, Derek Bailey and Evan Parker. The tuba-player Robin Hayward (UK) has worked with John Butcher and is a member of the legendary Phosphor improvisation group. The bass clarinettist and saxophonist Lucio Capece (Argentina) studied under and played with Louis Sclavis and Gene Coleman). Each of the six musicians retains a high degree of freedom and independence in this score. The score itself was written on the basis of the ensemble's improvised material.
