About two thousand years ago Indian Buddhist monks wrote the 'Theratherigata', a collection of poems in praise of their meditative way of life. The performance by Tom Hannes and Mauro Pawloswki is based on the poem written by the monk Mahakasyapa, who was one of Buddha's closest pupils and succeeded him when he died. It was among other things a shared interest in the work of John Cage that brought Hannes and Pawlowski together. Tom Hannes (b. 1970) selected a number of striking sentences from the 'Theratherigata' and rewrote them to form a long, repetitive performance piece. Ordinary sentences, parts of sentences and sound-vocalisations together form a sequence. Mauro Pawlowski is responsible for the musical section. With Mahakasyapa's text in mind, Pawlowski opts for the greatest possible simplicity and concentrates on his trustworthy guitar.
