A performance of Canto is more of a ritual than a concert.Simeon ten Holt
Helena Basilova unveils a bold new perspective on the iconic Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt. In collaboration with Aart Strootman (live electronics), the solo piano merges with pre-recorded pianos and is spatialised in the 4DSOUND studio, together with additional textures that heighten its intensity and emotional power.
This new version of Canto Ostinato premiered earlier this year at the monumental Zuiderkerk during ADE. The performance begins in stillness, followed by delicate, mesmerising patterns that gradually unfold and draw you deeper into an immersive listening experience. Through spatialisation, time becomes tangible - sound moves, floats and takes on a physical presence within the space.
All of this is mirrored by a scenography by Nick Verstand, whose immersive installation responds in real time to the nuances of the music, reimagining Canto Ostinato in a completely new light.
