In the Mexico of the sixties and seventies, young guerrillas took up arms in a desperate attempt to change society. In ‘El Rumor del Incendio’ you see the children of that generation on stage. They go in search of the stories and questions of the revolutionaries of that time. Central to their quest are the remains of an unresolved conflict and a generation that thought it could change the world. According to these young artists from Mexico City, ‘they spent the first half of their lives preparing for the revolution and the second half apologizing for it’.
Without being didactic, three performers bring historical events to life with tin soldiers that they film against a background of scale models. Unbridled fantasy goes hand in hand with documentary theatre. In this they reveal their desire for rebellion. However, the creators contrast the will to act with the difficulty of realising hopeful, and especially enduring, political projects. When is resistance necessary, by what means and at what price? Luisa Pardo and Gabino Rodríguez, the driving forces behind Lagartijas tiradas al Sol, wrestle with these questions just like their forefathers. However, of one thing they are sure: we should never forget history.
