Metropolis: youth festival about tech, future & art. From podcast to catwalk.
Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927) is the mother of all science fiction films. Its central theme is the man and the machine. The film sketches a vision of the future (in 2026 - 100 years later). Metropolis inspired groundbreaking science fiction films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Blade Runner and The Matrix.
Just as Fritz Lang sketched a vision of the future for 2026 in 1927, the project aims to present a vision of the future for 2126 based on the ideas and living environments of young people. How do they see the world and humans evolving, given the growing impact of technology? What are the opportunities, desires, challenges and obstacles? How do you develop these contents into a strong performance using the tools theatre, music and technology?
Metropolis will be a youth festival featuring numerous cultural, social, and educational partners from the city. In 2025, our world is overwhelmingly dominated by the rapid implementation of technological inventions. This super-fast development forces everyone to ask themselves: What do I want from technology? What does technology want from me? With the Metropolis project, we aim to create a contemporary narrative.
Together with the city’s young people, we want to explore this theme and give it an artistic form. This will be a festival created by and for young people. How do they see the future with the man and the machine? A festival featuring podcasts, theatre, music, musical theatre, workshops, debates, film, exhibitions, catwalks, spoken word, and dance.
Madam Fortuna is bringing this project to life in collaboration with, among others, hetpaleis, Muziektheater Transparant, Tutti Fratelli, Arenberg, KASK Antwerp, de! Kunsthumaniora, BL!NDMAN, and DE SINGEL.
