Legend has it that skateboarding was born on a day that small waves forced the surfers in Los Angeles to seek out the asphalt. Skating grew into a remarkable choreography in the public space, which in the meantime is firmly anchored in urban culture, including in Antwerp. In Skatepark, choreographer Mette Ingvartsen explores the speed and energy of movement on wheels - a physical memory of her own youth. For this she collaborates with a regular group of skaters and dancers, as well as making room for the local Antwerp skate community on the forecourt of DE SINGEL. The virtuosity of these daredevils on wheels notwithstanding, Ingvartsen wants to show more than just clever tricks: the performance is also the exploration of a community that is defined by passion, perseverance and hard work. Through trial and error they shift the boundaries of what is physically possible, both individually and as a group.
On Friday 22 September at 16:00, the skate park will open on the forecourt of DE SINGEL.
From 18:30 to 19:30, some professional skaters will come to give a demo. Everyone welcome!
