Aernoudt Jacobs' work is generally based on field recordings, or recordings the artist makes of the sounds around him. The idea for the sound installation 'Phantom Melodies' originated on a nesting site for cranes in India. The sound of thousands of birds taking flight was one of the most ephemeral and transitory sounds Jacobs had ever heard. When listening to his recordings at home afterwards he discovered that they in no way reflected what he had experienced when he recorded them. 'Phantom Melodies' is a sound installation consisting of revolving double loudspeakers on a stand. The installation is a work in itself. However, on this occasion it is also transformed into the background for a live sound performance by Julia Eckhardt (violin). Together with Aernoudt Jacobs she presents us with a composition that plays with the speed and direction of the revolving loudspeakers.
