Not that the gents with the comical suits, high collars and long side-whiskers have now become greying veterans, but still: Der Rote Bereich (literally 'The Red Domain') have been together for ten years and have every reason to celebrate. They have for some time been considered the 'most important representatives of German avant-garde jazz' (Der Tagesspiegel) as a consequence of their idiosyncratic music, anarchistic humour, clever arrangements and original sound. Despite all the metamorphoses the group has been through, its initiators (the guitarist Frank Möbus and the bass clarinettist Rudi Mahall) continue to fuel the group with new sounds. Their ambiguous compositions draw inspiration from pop and rock, but also from jazz and twelve-tone music. Their energetic playing, way beyond all conventions, and their struggle against musical prejudices, are expressed in unexpected metrical and harmonic changes and in ironic interpretations. An absolute must!
