Since the late Sixties, the American artist Max Mullican has been using hypnosis as a starting point for his performances. By means of hypnosis, he can mentally 'surf' between reality and fiction, between consciousness and subconsciousness, between impressions from the real world and the model of a cosmology he has been constructing for the last four decades. During these performances, the artist can as it were enter his own, self-created the world, without knowing beforehand how he will react to it. The performance under hypnosis takes place in an 'uninhabited time', which is external to the causality of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Mullican reaches this uninhabited time by using several media experimentally: in the sessions presented here he examines for the first time the spatial limitations of his own studio, and manipulates colours and light, imagining himself inside the body of his nine-year-old twin daughter (!)...
