BITOI (Bass Is The Original Instrument) is a Swedish-Danish group centred around bass and vocals, founded by award-winning composer and bassist Cassius Lambert, together with singers Alexandra Shabo, Ella Cronberg, and Lydia Cronberg.
With minimal means, BITOI creates a rich and sharply defined soundscape. The female trio combines raw power with refined textures: tight harmonies and dissonances move above deep, pulsing basslines. Their lyrics, based on phonetically transcribed birdsong, evolve into chants that sound both ancient and refreshingly modern.
The ensemble embodies Lambert’s concept of ‘miximalism’: extracting maximum sound from minimal resources - bass, vocals, polyrhythms, and subtly crafted textures.
