In this concert, clarinettist Roeland Hendrikx and his ensemble tame an unrestrained menagerie. Camille Saint-Saëns regarded his rowdy, playful ‘Carnaval des animaux’ as unsuitable for the concert stage, despite its being widely embraced by the general public. In these 14 character sketches, Saint-Saëns also includes 'pianists' and ‘fossils’ in the animal kingdom. For the occasion, Piet Swerts has arranged Saint-Saëns’ original for clarinet, strings and piano. And Swerts builds further on this colourful animal suite, inspired by Apollinaire’s iconic 1911 collection ‘Le Bestiaire’. This features 26 animals in short, witty emblematic poems.
