Familiestraat by Thomas Verstraeten was last season’s standout happening. In a factory building on Petroleum-Zuid the Antwerp-based theatre maker and visual artist constructed a life-sized replica of his street in wood and cardboard. 200 local residents and extras then presented a six-hour-long overview of the coronavirus year 2020, exactly how it was experienced in the real Familiestraat. From cold winter nights to sultry summer evenings. From small trifles to big life events. Now Verstraeten walks back through his street, with a film that will allow the general public to relive this - one might say mythical - performance. The footage comes from the Brussels-based film-maker Heleen Declercq, who during rehearsals allowed her Steadicam to glide through the street. Sound designer Senjan Jansen has created a charming soundtrack. A special memory of a year that will doubtless remain etched on our memories.
