In 2017 theatre maker Ahilan Ratnamohan, in collaboration with Feras Shaheen, came up with a new, fictitious dance form: klapping. Just like with other street dance genres such as krumping, house and breakdance, klapping has its own set of movements, a unique dress code and its own music. However the inspiration comes from an unexpected quarter: football. A few years ago, Ratnamohan migrated from Australia to Belgium to build up a professional football career. When this did not get off the ground, he decided to translate his experiences into theatre. Klapping is a workshop, an initiation, a performance, a jam session and a lecture in one. In a special place in the city, the audience will be immersed in the principles and energy of klapping. What if we no longer see football as merely a sport but as a ritual that can bring people together?
