Begüm Erciyas, who in the coming years will be an in-house artist at DE SINGEL, often creates connectedness with the power of the voice in her performances. Via sound she guides the listener-spectator on a sensory trip that is at once individual and collective. Letters from Attica is Erciyas’ first creation for the public space, one that cannot be missing from our new city festival. The artist drew inspiration from the secret letters that Sam Melville wrote from the famous Attica prison in New York in the late nineteen sixties. He was detained following a series of bombings in protest at the Vietnam war, and would also die in prison during a riot. In an intimate whispering performance, together with the audience Erciyas brings Melville’s revolutionary words back to life. How can a voice travel from a single body to many?
