The buzzing concert of the futurists - the original noise-makers - definitively changed western music. They opted for the sound of aeroplane engines and sirens instead of those of a traditional symphony orchestra. The role of percussion was substantially re-evaluated in the works of composers such as Edgard Varèse and John Cage. Since then, percussion has been increasingly used to generate all sorts of sound effects in a manner comparable to the way digital 'noise' is produced today by laptop composers. The programme for this concert contains three new creations, by Yannis Kyriakides, Dmitri Kourliandski and Serge Verstockt, in which percussion and live electronics play a leading part. This is the sound of the 21st century!
