A DJ with 78 spinning discs, a London sound artist, a prepared zither, a clavichord, a hexaphonic speaker set-up, viola da gamba, percussion and live visuals. These are the elements that are brought together in the contrasting context of the magnificent St Augustine's Church. Hermes chose to entrust a large part of the music@venture programme to the unconventional young composer Thomas Smetryns. Smetryns' work for viola da gamba, DJ, clavichord, sitar, guitar and percussion occupies a central position. Those who know Smetryns' music know that, at first glance, he approaches this irreconcilable set of instruments with kid gloves. Old and new form the starting point for this work. This can be seen in the instruments chosen and in the exploitation of the natural acoustics of the space, versus the contemporary electronic techniques. The world-renowned electronics phenomenon Kaffe Matthews is responsible for the latter. Rarely seen in Belgium! In addition, there is also music from Kaija Saariaho and a special DJ performance on the bill, continually supported by images from the New York video artist Kurt Ralske.
