'Void' is a piece of meditative musical theatre based on Wim Henderickx' composition 'Sunyata'. The structural thread is the Buddhist shri yantra. 'Void' is the middle part of his 'Tantric Cycle', a series of compositions whose inspiration lies in the orient. Wouter Van Looy, the director, approaches consciousness and identity from a Western point of view. He draws inspiration from the possibilities and limits of recent neurophysiological research and from the writings and poems of Fernando Pessoa. This Portuguese poet's work is permeated with attempts to escape the absurdity of reality. In a series of evocative meditative images, we follow five characters who try to get a hold on reality and wrestle with the unbearable relativity of existence. The characters wander around in 'House', an interpretation of a home, designed by the artist Hans Op de Beeck. The house breathes, suffers and comforts. It is the setting for reflection on mortality and the senseless longing for what is past, where the need for spirituality and detachment from material things becomes tangible.
